del Besòs and four other districts of the city: Ciutat Vella, Ensanche, Horta-Guinardó and San Andreu. San Marti is the second most populated district in Barcelona.
Provençals comes from the Latin word ‘provincialis’, which is how Romans used to call the fields located outside the walls of the city. San Marti was the name of the first chapel in the area in honour of San Martín de Tours – Roman soldier who left the army to convert to Catholicism and later became bishop of Tours (French city in Indre-et-Loire). Nowadays there’s still a Sant Martin church located in the northern part of the district.
Some areas of San Marti are progressively growing and being renovated. Fine examples of some renovation projects are the works in the old industrial neighbourhood Poble Nou, the restoration of Plaza de las Glorias and two projects involving the main avenues in the area, Gran Via and Diagonal.
