About Les Corts, Barcelona
The first residents of Barcelona’s district called Les Corts belonged to the neolithic period. Reminds of that era were found near Avenida Diagonal - one of the main avenues of Barcelona ...more details > - as well as remains of a Roman necropolis.
In 1836 Les Corts got its autonomy as a town and the area started building urban developments (the church Santa Maria del Remedio and the cemetery were also constructed). By the end of 1870 Les Corts was still a very rural area where many wealthy families had their holiday houses. Other districts of Barcelona were much more industrialized by that time. Nowadays Les Corts district in Barcelona is quite a heterogeneous neighbourhood – there are typical constructions from the 80’s and 90’s as well as areas with more modern buildings.
Les Corts is home of ‘Nou Camp’, the famous Barcelona Football Club stadium (commonly known as Barca). It is located very near Avenida Diagonal. The Barca head office is located in Nou Camp, as well as the Football Club Barcelona Museum (Museo del FC Barcelona) - the most visited museum in Cataluña!
The Nou Camp is an impressive construction and one of the biggest stadiums in the world. It is classified as a 5-star stadium by UEFA (Union of European Football Associations).
The Barca stadium was inaugurated the 24th of September 1957, the day of La Mercè, the patron of Barcelona. The first goal ever celebrated in Nou Camp was scored by the Barcelones player Eulogio Martinez during a friendly match between Barcelona and Warsaw. After being remodelled in 1998 the stadium has a capacity of 99,000 spectators and the dimension of the football field is 105 x 68 metres.
Nowadays every football match played by FC Barcelona in Nou Camp is a real celebration that gathers fans and tourists alike. Some of the Barca most famous players: Ronaldinho Gaucho "Ronaldinho", young Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi, Samuel Eto'o, Anderson Luis de Souza "Deco", Carles Puyol, Victor Valdes, Xavier Hernandez "Xavi", Juliano Belletti, Rafa Marquez, Thiago Motta, Ludovic Giuly, Oleguer Presas, Andres Iniesta and more...
